MADE IN USA. THE WORK OF SONIC YOUTH BETWEEN INDIE AND POP, VIDEO AND CINEMA

With Maria Teresa Soldani.

The book analyses the paradigmatic role of the noise/art rock band Sonic Youth within visual and media culture, especially of the ’80s and ’90s. The quartet’s audiovisual output goes beyond musical content, connecting to Pop Art, to Appropriation Art, to conceptual art and to underground cinema through the results of a series of emblematic collaborations, especially in the form of the music video and the film. Emerging from the downtown New York art scene of the early ’80s, with the influence of punk and no wave, Sonic Youth create a system of relationships that transposes and articulates within itself the concept of “cultural scene”, becoming drivers of the paradigm of an “indie culture” that from the United States has influenced the rest of the world. In this network Do-It-Yourself – trans-local and expanded – of musicians, artists and film-makers, the band activated broader artistic and communicative strategies centred on the body (body, corpse, youth) seen as the epicentre of American culture, which aim to call into question gender conventions (such as music genre, gender, film genre).

SWINGING 60s - PRESENTAZIONE LIBRO

With Franco Dassisti e Michelangelo Iossa.

Franco Dassisti presents the book Swinging 60s (ed. Hoepli) scritto insieme a Michelangelo Iossa.

On 5 October 1962 the Beatles’ first 45 rpm single (Love Me Do) and the first James Bond film (Dr. No – Licenza di uccidere) came out on the same day. From that day on, global pop culture was never the same again: the “fabulous Sixties” were effectively born, the most creative and stimulating decade of the twentieth century.

Taking its cue from that coincidence, the book (embellished with graphics in the style of the era and with historical images) retraces the epic of a season that saw the worlds of music, cinema, the arts, fashion and customs undergo a shock of gigantic proportions. It is no coincidence that in those days the Time definiva Londra “Swinging” mentre Diana Vreeland, direttrice di Vogue, celebrated the English capital as “the most fashionable city in the world”.

From the primordial soup of the ’50s to the “end of the dream” in 1970, the work focuses on the path that saw music as a catalysing, catalytic element that inspired and was inspired by the other forms of artistic expression, thus creating a revolutionary, countercultural movement capable of sweeping the world.

The music of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Animals, Kinks, Cream and many other legendary rock bands was the perfect soundtrack of those years and still exerts a formidable fascination, highly relevant today.
