SEEYOUSOUND X DIARY – DAY 3

The first of the two Sundays of Seeyousound X was rainy, but it did not dampen the support of the loyal audience.

The third day saw the launch of Seeyoutalk, the programme of talks about music, cinema and culture organised by the Festival. There were two events. The first took place at Capodoglio, where Pierfrancesco Pacoda, producer discografico e critico musicale, ha preso parola in “Musica e Territorio” explaining how festivals change the places that host them. For the second event we rushed back to Cinema Massimo, in Sala 3 Soldati, where the great journalist Carlo Massarini gave his masterclass “Music Doc: Memory Becomes Art”. Carlo captivated the audience with his skills as a great storyteller, commenting on and comparing documentaries dedicated to great faces of music who are, however, very different: BBKing, Nick Cave, Enzo Jannacci and the Rolling Stones.

The main musical event of the third day arrived at 8.45 pm with the performance vibrAXIONES, part of the Rising Sound programme. A multidisciplinary performance that links music, cinema and video art, perfectly in keeping with the Festival’s mission, born from the meeting of two Turin collectives that in recent years have been pushing the search for sounds coming from different cultures, namely l’etichetta Salgari Records e l’orchestra sperimentale Pietra Tonale. Electronic sounds, strings and noise modulations that provided a live score for the interweaving of scenes from the works of Theo Montoya, a director who explores the atmospheres of contemporary Colombian queer nightlife, with scenes from Cabiria from 1914, an integral part of the history of Italian silent cinema. A visual and sonic fusion that sought to highlight the tension between two radically different views of the world, offering ideas for new narratives.

Also for Rising Sound, at 6 pm in Sala 1, there was a screening of Sankara, a film by Yohan Malka that tells the story of Thomas Sankara, a charismatic leader for the whole of sub-Saharan West Africa. In this film Malka explores Sankara’s ecological and feminist theses and his critique of colonialism, which are still relevant today and made him an icon capable of inspiring younger generations such as the French rappers Kalash Criminel and Youssoupha.

In the afternoon, the task of kicking off the third day’s programme had fallen to The Cord of Life, a film in the LP Feature section. A tender and aching look at a mother-son relationship and at music as a link with time. Another afternoon screening was the documentary Brigitte Fontaine: Réveiller les vivants, the story of the character of Brigitte, her ideas and her iconoclastic work, which led her to collaborate with The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Grace Jones, Sonic Youth and Stereolab. Closing the Sunday, instead, was the combo in Sala Soldati made up of Even Hell Has Its Heroes e XXXplicit Dance.

There is still a week to go, rich in films, music and talks, and we hope the rain will not dampen too much the warm atmosphere that Seeyousound is creating in this edition as well.
