INTO THE GROOVE
Into the Groove has – practically from the very beginning – been Seeyousound’s great “container.” I deliberately use this term, as it conveys a broad vision, an open, welcoming, diverse and tolerant nature. In a contemporary world that continues to express mainly hatred, wars, aggression, ignorance and aberrant new world orders, we choose to take refuge in this great “container,” an inviting home where we celebrate stories, lives, and the unifying, joyful and never divisive power of music.
We will open the programme by celebrating an extraordinary career: the nearly forty-year journey of Casino Royale, one of the most courageous and innovative forces in contemporary Italian music. A special evening, co-produced hand in hand with the band, weaving together sounds, suggestions and visual imaginaries through the screening of their two latest films — Quarantine Scenario by Pepsy Romanoff and Alba ad Ovest by Frankie Caradonna — and an immersive live performance that will reveal the Milanese group in a new and unexpected light.
We will then travel between the United Kingdom and the Tabernas Desert for two intense and sincere portraits: one of pop icons Boy George and Culture Club, and one of Micah P. Hinson, a fragile and gentle soul of our time, whose sensitivity and depth we will also experience through an exclusive live performance following the screening.
In the United States, we will recount the birth of house music with Move Ya Body: The Birth of House, a multi-selected documentary presented at the latest Tribeca, and celebrate the twentieth anniversary of DIG! with DIG! XX, an extended and remixed version of Ondi Timoner’s cult film, which tells the intense and combative relationship between The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. We will then venture into the icy landscapes of the Arctic with BICEP in TAKKUUK, before returning to Italy for the world premiere of La prima festa, the directorial debut of Pietro Fuccio, which takes us back to the days of the pandemic and to the rediscovered joy of those modern collective rituals we call concerts.
The festival will close with two great acts of love. The first is dedicated to Turin, portrayed through two different perspectives: that of those who saw it transform and explode between the 1980s and 1990s (Falene by Ivan Cazzola), and that of those who discovered it as outsiders, drawn in by its soul and a new, vibrant scene (Nostra Torino Oscura by Thomas Griffin).
The second is a tribute to an infinite artist such as David Bowie, with the international premiere of Bowie: The Final Act, a film focusing on the final period of his life and on the album Blackstar, his true artistic testament.
A container of stories made of affection, love, rivalry, friendship and fragility to be shared together, to get to know one another, tolerate one another and appreciate one another, rejecting the fear that others seek to instill in us.
Such a rich container can only invite us to draw from it with full hands. Long live music, long live Seeyousound, and long live you, our beloved audience.
