On the occasion of the screening of Oh Yeah!<\/em> in the International Short Film Competition at SEEYOUSOUND, we spoke with director Nick Canfield.<\/p>\n

Canfield began his career as a camera assistant to legendary documentarian Albert Maysles, developing an intimate and truthful visual style while working as a cinematographer and archivist at Maysles Films. His debut film, the music documentary The Reverend<\/em>, won the Audience Award at DOC NYC. Premiered at the Tribeca Festival, Oh Yeah!<\/em> is distributed by Rolling Stone Films and Documentary+.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Do you remember the first time you encountered this song? For many of us it was through Ferris Bueller\u2019s Day Off<\/em>\u2014was that the case for you too, or did it come later, through one of its countless subsequent uses?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>It was through <\/span>Ferris<\/span><\/i> and another 80\u2019s film <\/span>The Secret of My Success<\/span><\/i>, which uses the song even more and was a seminal film in my childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did the short film come into being, and at what point did you realise you wanted to focus specifically on the story of Oh Yeah<\/i><\/b>?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>My first film was a feature music documentary about a musician who\u2019s played long running residency, and I filmed it in a mostly observational way over many years. I wanted to make a film with a narrower focus, and I thought a film about one song would be interesting. One morning I woke up with Oh Yeah stuck in my head and I thought this song says a lot about a certain time and culture, and I wondered if people behind the song are as unusual as the song itself – and it turned out that they are.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In recent years, several music\u2011related films have centred on iconic songs\u2014Hallelujah<\/em>, We Are The World<\/em> or My Way<\/em>, for instance (the latter was screened at SYS11). What do you think has made Oh Yeah<\/em> iconic in its own particular way?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>The way the song has become a cultural touchstone is unique. Though it fit right into 80\u2019s culture and the music of the time, it has also become timeless. Oh Yeah<\/em> now has a direct association with certain feelings and conjures them up instantly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We often associate songs with the emotions they evoke in us. We can easily think of countless examples tied to joy, sadness, even anger\u2014but far fewer that instinctively connect to desire and lust. Is that Oh Yeah<\/em><\/b>\u2019s superpower?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>Exactly, somehow the song manages to accomplish that with its musical arrangement as well as its lyrics. These emotions are just as important for us to experience and convey, there\u2019s nothing wrong with having fun and being carefree, we can learn something from that as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh Yeah<\/em> also seems like a perfect lens through which to reflect on the broader idea of virality. Would you say it functions as a kind of proto\u2011meme? It feels almost tailor\u2011made for today\u2019s TikTok audio culture, for example.
\n<\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>Absolutely, porto-memes like Oh Yeah<\/em> were spread by word of mouth and by audio, which could be played on the radio, repeated in-person, and then used again and again in multiple movies and media.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your film was released shortly before another high\u2011profile appearance of the song, namely in the third episode of the latest season of Stranger Things<\/em>. Do you think this might spark a new wave of popularity for the track?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>I hope so, I think that a new generation is now being exposed to the song and will learn about Yello that way. This continues to happen every few years, as it did with Oh Yeah in <\/span>The Simpsons<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Rick and Morty<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not uncommon for artists\u2014especially more self\u2011consciously \u201cserious\u201d ones\u2014to feel ambivalent or even hostile toward the work that brought them the most fame. Has that ever been the case with Yello?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>Yello is wonderfully refreshing in their perspective and demeanor. Boris and Dieter are appreciative of the success the song has had and how it has enabled them to make more music and art, and expose some of the massive Oh Yeah audience to that body of work. They really are art for art\u2019s sake people and would keep creating even if Oh Yeah had never become famous.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is your third film connected to music, following The Reverend<\/em><\/b> and <\/b>My Back Pages<\/b><\/em>. How central is music in your life?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>Music is very important in my life but I\u2019m actually not a much of a musician (though I do like to jam out), and my record collection is eclectic but not nearly as extensive as some other big music fans. I\u2019m interested in how music impacts the way we think and feel, and how it\u2019s used. It makes a soundtrack to our lives, wether we are the ones choosing it or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Turning to cinematic influences, you\u2019ve often mentioned Albert Maysles as a mentor figure. Do you feel that a film like Gimme Shelter<\/em> played a role in shaping your interest in music as a recurring subject in your work?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>It may have, <\/span>Gimme Shelter<\/span><\/i> is an amazing film, in the way that it shows the human stories behind the concert and the Rolling Stones that were so well known that they were more of an image to most fans than real people – until the documentary came out.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have produced both feature\u2011length and short films. What do you see as the key strengths of the short\u2011film format?
\n<\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>Some subjects don\u2019t lend themselves towards a full feature format and are better told in a short film. Short films can be absorbed by audiences in different contexts, both in the media and format they are presented, and psychologically.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
